Can’t make it to Broadway? Show lyrics come to you

- ASHLEY MARTIN

Jane Ursan wanted to give Regina audiences the chance to hear some new Broadway songs sung live, but a full-scale musical was not an option.

“Because so many of these musicals just run for years and years and years on Broadway in particular, they’re not available to perform except in touring companies that come through,” said Ursan, artistic director of the Lyric Singers.

“So people are not really that familiar with the stuff that’s a little more modern.”

The Greatest Show: 21st Century Showstoppers from Stage and Screen presents the next best thing after a full-stage musical.

The Lyric Singers’ concert includes songs from current Broadway hit shows, including Hamilton, Wicked, Frozen, Spamalot and La La Land.

“We’re doing ‘You Will Be Found’ from Dear Evan Hansen and that’s an absolutely wonderful, wonderful song and wonderful show,” said Ursan.

“I’ve always really liked the stuff from Seussical, and we’re doing ‘Alone in the Universe’ ...

“It’s filled with absolutely some of the most wonderful music that people will have ever heard.”

The Lyric Singers present choral versions of these songs, some sung by all 38 choir members, and some done as solos or duets.

A nine-piece band — including a string quartet comprised of three 2018 National Music Festival winners — will accompany the vocalists.

The Greatest Show: 21st Century Showstoppers from Stage and Screen runs Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 29-Dec. 1.

Nightly shows begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum theatre. Tickets are $20 and available at Dancer’s Den Dancewear (1630 Albert St.) or online at reginalyric. com.
