Cougars keep hot streak Alive

Christina Mccusker hosted a block party Saturday to help the University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team finish the first half of its season on a high note.

Mccusker blocked four shots, including the 100th of her fiveyear Canada West career, as the U of R defeated the Macewan Grizzlies 86-28 at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport.

With 102 blocks, the Reginaborn Mccusker moved past Brittany Read (100) for third on the Cougars’ all-time blocks list. Jennilea Coppola (138) is first, followed by Chelsea Cassano (127).

Carolina Goncalves also had a big game for the Cougars on Saturday, scoring 15 of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter.

Regina was 13-for-30 from three-point range, led by Faith Reid (4-for-7) and Goncalves (37).

Kyanna Giles added 20 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists for the Cougars (8-2), who are ranked ninth in U Sports entering the Christmas break.

The Cougars swept a weekend set with Macewan, having won 67-33 on Friday. Giles (14), Reid (14) and Goncalves (13) were the Cougars’ leading scorers.

Next up for the Cougars is a Jan. 4-5 set against the host University of Victoria Vikes.

Regina also swept Macewan in men’s basketball, winning 86-58 on Friday and 86-79 on Saturday at the CKHS.

The Cougars (7-3) have won seven of their past eight games.

Samuel Hillis had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars in the opener, registerin­g his fifth double-double in a span of six games. Brayden Kuski’s 18 points paced the U of R on Saturday.

Morgan Baker made 19 saves for the shutout as the U of R women’s hockey team blanked the Mount Royal Cougars 3-0 in Calgary on Saturday.

Regina, which split a weekend set, improved to 6-6-1-3.

Arthur Miller scored in double overtime to give Regina a 2-1 victory over Mount Royal in men’s hockey action on Saturday at the Co-operators Centre.

Regina (3-12-1) rebounded from Friday’s 12-2 loss to Mount Royal.
