Sandbox Series raises curtains on 2019

- ASHLEY MARTIN

The Globe Theatre has unveiled a three-show lineup for its 2019 Sandbox Series.

Apple Time by the Deaf Crows Collective kicks things off in February.

Created by students of the Regina Public School Division’s deaf and hard of hearing program, the show premiered in June at The Artesian.

It uses mime, circus arts, puppetry, American Sign Language and subtitles to tell the students’ stories through characters including a clown and a moose.

Apple Time runs Feb. 7-10 at the Globe Theatre.

Jordan Tannahill’s play Concord Floral is the second Sandbox Series show.

It’s presented by Globe Theatre School and features the Young Company, an invitation-based ensemble of actors between 17 and 20 years old.

Described as a “supernatural thriller of suburban teenagers fleeing a mysterious plague,” the play tells the story of Rosa Mundi, Nearly Wild and their friends, who frequent an abandoned greenhouse, Concord Floral. Then they stumble upon a dark secret.

Tannahill is a Governor General’s Award-winning Canadian playwright.

The show runs from March 28 to April 6 at the Globe Theatre.

Kenneth T. Williams’ play In Care finishes the season.

It’s about a mother’s quest to get her children out of foster care. Janice Fisher was a teenage prostitute with addictions issues. She was 15 when social services apprehended her first daughter. Now, having turned her life around, a false accusation lands Janice’s three daughters in foster care. The more she struggles to get out of the system, the more stuck she becomes.

Williams is from the George Gordon First Nation, about 110 kilometres north of Regina.

Presented by Globe Theatre School, a limited number of paywhat-you-can tickets will be reserved for this show.

In Care takes place at The Artesian from June 13 to 22.

Sandbox Series subscriptions are available for $45 plus taxes and fees. Single tickets are $21. Learn more at globetheatrelive. com.
