Youth accused in 2018 death of teen girl denied bail after review

-

A 16-year-old boy accused of killing a teenage girl will stay in custody, having failed in his bid to have his bail denial overturned.

Back in October, a bail hearing held at Regina youth court resulted in the 16-year-old being refused bail. A review was held at Regina Court of Queen’s Bench this week, at the end of which a judge decided against releasing the youth.

Details of evidence and submissions presented at either hearing cannot be reported because of a court-imposed publication ban.

Neither the boy nor the 16-yearold girl he is accused of killing can be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Under that act, the deceased victim of an alleged crime committed by a youth cannot be identified unless a parent or guardian gives permission. In this case, no such permission has been granted.

According to previously reported information, the girl died shortly after midnight on Oct. 14 on the 900 block of Cameron Street. The Regina Police Service reported police and EMS arrived to find an injured girl. Efforts to provide emergency medical treatment at the scene were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for the end of April.

The Crown has said it is considering requesting an adult sentence should the youth ultimately be found guilty.
