#VISUAL ART

Agnes Martin: The mind knows what the eye has not seen Mackenzie Art Gallery, 3475 Albert St. This exhibition offers an unprecedented focus on Martin’s print works, in addition to selected paintings that exist in dialogue with the prints. A parallel collection of ephemera and source material introduces Martin’s life and work, focusing on her on-going relationship to Canada – her childhood in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, as well as her later travels in Canada. Sakkijâjuk: Art and Craft from Nunatsiavut Mackenzie Art Gallery, 3475 Albert St. Sakkijâjuk: Art and Craft from Nunatsiavut is the first major exhibition on the art of the Labrador Inuit. Sakkijâjuk provides an opportunity

for visitors, collectors, art historians, and art aficionados from the South and the North to come into intimate contact with the distinctive, innovative and always breath-taking work of the contemporary Inuit artists and craftspeople of Nunatsiavut. In recent decades, artists from the territory have produced work in a variety of contemporary art media while also working with traditional materials in new and unexpected ways. Organized by The Rooms, the exhibition includes a diverse range of work by 47 artists across four generations, including works on paper, painting, photography, sculpture, textile works, and video. The Kampelmacher Memorial Collection of Indigenous Art Mackenzie Art Gallery, 3475 Albert St. With a vision that expands beyond a singular geographical area or style, art aficionado Thomas Druyan and his wife Alice Ladner have embraced an incredible and eclectic view of North American art by artists of First Nations, Metis, Inuit, Native American, and Indigenous ancestry. Superscreen: The Making of an Artist-run Counterculture and the Grand Western Canadian Screen Shop Mackenzie Art Gallery, 3475 Albert St. An exhibition that will look at the activities, social environment and legacy of the Prairies’ first artist-run centre, the Grand Western Canadian Screen Shop. The exhibition returns to the Canada of the sixties and seventies to contextualize the Screen Shop within a time characterized by personal and political consciousness-raising and dynamic change within the arts. Are You My Mother? Dunlop Central Mediatheque, 2311 12th Ave. Exhibition runs until March 24. Whether the relationships are close, strained, or absent, being parented (or disconnected from caregivers) is a universal experience. Are You My Mother? considers what is shared about the experience of being raised, while underscoring the less universal, more specific circumstances that shape how we feel about our caregivers – feelings of warmth and love, and in the case of grief, loss and gratitude. The selected artists also explore thoughts and perceptions around how we view our caregivers: what we know and don’t know about them as people outside their identity as caregivers, and what we may never understand about the people who parent (or are meant to raise) us. Rachel Echenberg Dunlop Central Mediatheque, 2311 12th Ave. Referencing Joseph Beuys’ 1965 performance, How to explain pictures to a dead hare, where the artist, face covered in gold leaf and honey, toured his exhibition with a dead hare cradled in his arms, Montreal-based artist Rachel Echenberg and her daughter Clara Echenberg-worsnip cover each other’s faces and heads with honey and gold leaf. This tender, absurd act places both mother and daughter in the role of the artist-teacher. For Every Sunset We Haven’t Seen Dunlop Sherwood Gallery, 2311 12 Ave. Nicole Kelly Westman is a Calgary-based artist of Métis and Icelandic descent. She uses a variety of media to develop real and imagined narratives to explain what the photographic medium can, and cannot do and describe. Manipulating the effects of light and embracing the physical qualities of materials she uses, Westman inventively explores the landscape genre and the supernatural, frequently working in collaboration with other artists. The Last Picture Show Slate Fine Art Gallery, 2078 Halifax St. A multi-artist exhibition focusing on Bill Lobchuk and the artists who utilized the Grand Western Screen Shop which operated out of Winnipeg during the 60’, 70’s and 80’s. This will be the last exhibition at 2078 Halifax St. as Slate Fine Art Gallery is relocating in April. No Limits The Lobby Gallery, 1077 Angus St. An art installation by Regina Art Collective members Delee Grant and Mark Sexton, with guest artists Derek Olson and Terry Weir. Monday-friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. First Nations University Represents indigenous visual art practices, culture and history found in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada and globally.
