Thunder set to announce its all-time team Sunday

The Regina Thunder is hoping to celebrate the past and the present this weekend.

Regina can clinch second place in the Prairie Football Conference and a home playoff game by defeating the Winnipeg Rifles on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Leibel Field. The Saskatoon Hilltops (7-0) have clinched first place. Regina and the Edmonton Huskies, both 5-2, are tied for second entering the final weekend of the regular season. If the Thunder and Huskies finish with the same record, Regina will get the nod on the basis of head-to-head play. The Huskies are to visit the Calgary Colts on Sunday. At 1-6, Calgary and Winnipeg are tied for last place. At halftime of Sunday’s game at Leibel Field, the Thunder will announce its 20th-anniversar­y all-time team.

Entering Sunday’s game, the Thunder’s Blake Scherle leads the league in touchdown passes (17) and aerial yards (2,196). Regina’s Ethan Douglas leads the conference in receiving yards (631, on 34 receptions) and TD catches (seven). The Thunder’s Brandyn Martin has a league-best six intercepti­ons.

First place in the Regina Intercolle­giate Football League’s Schwann Conference will be decided on the final day of the regular season. On Friday, the Leboldus Golden Suns and Riffel Royals will square off in a battle of 5-0 teams. Kickoff is set for 5:15 p.m. at Leibel Field. Leboldus is coming off Thursday’s 58-14 victory over the Miller Marauders.

The Golden Suns’ Ryker Frank rushed 15 times for 163 yards and five touchdowns. Leboldus quarterbac­k Christian Fischer completed 11 of 14 passes for 272 yards and one touchdown. Jerry Wiebe had four catches for 110 yards and one TD for Leboldus. Andy Sweeney had a 73-yard TD reception for Miller, which got 11 tackles from Connor Sombach. Also on Thursday, Riffel defeated the Campbell Tartans 46-8.

The Royals’ Ethan Ball scored on a rush, a reception and a 74yard intercepti­on return. Royals teammate Hunter Bohay rushed 16 times for 146 yards and one TD. Mason Engele added a 48-yard intercepti­on-return TD. Kayman Mellor threw a touchdown pass for Campbell, which got nine tackles from Henry Browne and seven from Jack Hanwell.

In Thursday’s other game, the O’neill Titans shut out the Winston Knoll Wolverines 120. O’neill’s Tige Sinclair caught three passes for 111 yards and one TD. Noah Zimroz and Michael Bitz registered intercepti­ons for the Titans.

Two goals by Hannah Rugg led the Thom Trojans to a 3-1 victory over the Balfour Bears in Regina High Schools Athletic Associatio­n girls soccer Thursday.

Also on Thursday, the Luther Lions got three goals by Emma Der in a 4-1 victory over the Sheldon-williams Spartans, Leboldus defeated Miller 3-0, and Campbell blanked Winston Knoll 12-0.

The Regina Sports Hall of Fame’s 17th annual induction ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at Evraz Place. Neal Hughes (football), Shannon Mcgeady (golf) and Georgette Reed (athletics) are to be inducted as athletes. Dave Boan (water polo), Liane Mclean (curling) and James Hillis (basketball) are to be enshrined as builders.
