Thunder ready to host Huskies for PFC semifinal

The Regina Thunder is set to play host to the Edmonton Huskies on Sunday in a Prairie Football Conference semifinal.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., at Leibel Field, where the Thunder will also announce its 20th-anniversar­y all-time team.

Regina clinched second place with a default victory over the Winnipeg Rifles, who were unable to make it to the Queen City for the regular-season finale on the weekend. Treacherou­s weather conditions in Manitoba prevented the Rifles from being able to travel to Regina.

The Thunder and Huskies both finished the regular season with 6-2 records. However, Regina got the nod for second place because it won the teams’ only head-to-head matchup.

The Saskatoon Hilltops finished the regular season at 8-0 by defeating the Edmonton Wildcats 48-8. Those teams are scheduled to meet again next Sunday in Saskatoon in the other semifinal.

Molly Lakustiak and Stella Mcleod, both of Leboldus, won medals at the Saskatchew­an High Schools Athletic Associatio­n cross-country championsh­ips Saturday in Prince Albert.

Lakustiak finished second in the junior girls division, one spot ahead of Mcleod. Alexis Lewans of Saskatoon Holy Cross won the race.

Jadyn Palaschuk of Moose Jaw Central won the midget girls title. Belen Reed of Yorkton Sacred Heart was second.

The other gold medallists were Gilbert Chan of Saskatoon Walter Murray (midget boys), Abraham Makaby of Holy Cross (junior boys), Avery Pearson of Meadow Lake (senior girls) and Moktar Abou Said of Walter Murray (senior boys). Adam Mytopher of Strasbourg was second in the senior boys race.

Campbell placed third in the 5A team standings.

The Regina Pat Canadians split a pair of Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League road games on the weekend.

On Friday, Drayden Ramage made 17 saves for the shutout as Regina blanked the Tisdale Trojans 3-0. Cal Caragata had a goal and assisted on tallies by Carson Whyte and Noah Kuntz.

The Prince Albert Mintos edged the Pat Canadians 2-1 on Saturday. Kyren Gronick scored for Regina (5-2-0-0), which is to return to action Wednesday against the Yorkton Secon Maulers (8 p.m., Co-operators Centre).

The University of Regina Cougars women’s hockey team registered its first victory of the Canada West season by edging the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 2-1 on Saturday at the Co-operators Centre.

Regina (1-3-0-0) trailed 1-0 before getting power-play goals from Jaycee Magwood and Shaelyn Vallotton.

The Cougars rebounded from Friday’s 5-2 home-ice loss to Lethbridge. Merissa Zerr and Lilla Carpenter-boesch were Regina’s goal scorers.
