Missing outdoor game not option for Paddock

- GREG HARDER gharder@postmedia.com

Regina Pats goaltender Max Paddock has been out of action for more than two weeks, but the hiatus didn’t affect his timing.

Paddock’s anticipated return from a shoulder ailment is fortuitous heading into Sunday’s Prairie Classic against the Calgary Hitmen. The opportunity to play in an outdoor game at Mosaic Stadium is not something he was prepared to miss.

“I’ve been looking forward to it since (the news) came out,” Paddock said. “We had that chance two years ago when we were going to play Moose Jaw and it didn’t work out (due to weather concerns and poor ticket sales). I didn’t think I was going to get another opportunity, but here I am, just trying to make the most of it.”

Barring a late setback, Paddock is expected to get the start after missing four straight games. There was initially some concern he would miss more time, but a recent MRI showed no major damage.

Paddock will continue strengthening the joint via rehab, but he’s optimistic it’s something he’ll be able to play through.

Sunday’s outdoor game is a good place to start.

Paddock’s return is big news for the Pats (2-10-0), who will need the former Memorial Cup all-star to be an equalizer against one of the WHL’S most-talented teams (Calgary is 6-2-1).

The 19-year-old goaltender has been solid this season while posting a 3.86 goals-against average and an .875 save percentage — numbers that reflect the struggles of his team.

Paddock is frustrated by his recent absence, missing six of Regina’s 12 games (two because of a minor procedure to fix a bloody nose issue and four due to the shoulder). He played through an injury to the other shoulder late last season before having off-season surgery to repair a torn labrum.
