Rams receiver Schienbein set to make statistica­l mark in final

The University of Regina Rams are to conclude their 2019 Canada West football season Friday against the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., at Leibel Field.

The Rams (2-5) snapped a fivegame losing streak by defeating the host University of Alberta Golden Bears 31-17 on Saturday, but Regina was nonetheles­s eliminated from playoff contention due to results elsewhere.

Fifth-year Rams receiver Ryan Schienbein needs one catch to overtake Mark Mcconkey, the team’s current offensive co-ordinator, for second on the U of R’s all-time receptions list. Mcconkey and Schienbein have 180 receptions, 11 fewer than Jared Janotta.

Schienbein is fourth all-time in receiving yards and TD catches.

With 2,411 yards, Schienbein trails Janotta (2,579), Chad Goldie (2,458) and Mitch Picton (2,431). Picton holds the team record of 24 TD catches, followed by Goldie (21), Jason Clermont (19) and Schienbein (18).

The Balgonie Greenall Griffins and Balfour Bears are to meet in the Regina Intercolle­giate Football League’s Stewart Conference (5A) final on Monday (6 p.m., Leibel Field).

In semifinals on Tuesday, Greenall defeated the Johnson Wildcats 41-6 and Balfour downed the Martin Monarchs 28-22.

Greenall quarterbac­k Max Kennedy threw for 208 yards. Mattias Bzdel added a 28-yard fumble-return touchdown for the Griffins.

In the Schwann Conference (6A) Picot Bowl on Wednesday, the O’neill Titans defeated the Miller Marauders 23-7.

The Titans’ Jon Baht threw two TD passes to Tige Sinclair. O’neill also got a rushing touchdown from Peter Boersch and 103 rushing yards from Lane Erdelyan. The Titans’ Thomas Suwala had two intercepti­ons, one of which he returned 59 yards.

Miller scored on a 56-yard pass from Jacob Semchuk to Ethan Kiefer.

The Picot Bowl, which decides fifth and sixth place, is played annually in memory of longtime Regina football official Ken Picot.

The Schwann Conference final is set for Nov. 1, 6 p.m., at Leibel Field. Semifinals were to be played Thursday night.

The Regina Pats have signed goalie prospect Spencer Welke, 17, to a standard WHL player agreement.

Welke, an undrafted list pickup, is a member of the midget AAA Prince Albert Mintos.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Yorkton product has a 5-1-0 record this season with a 2.15 GAA and a .930 save percentage.

He helped the Yorkton Terriers win a provincial bantam AA title in 2016.

Danielle Fisher of Regina won overall titles in masters women’s and open women’s bodybuildi­ng last weekend at the Canadian Physique Alliance national championsh­ips in Toronto.

While recording a perfect score in both classes, the 36-year-old Fisher earned an Internatio­nal Federation of Bodybuildi­ng and Fitness pro card.
