DB Gainey re-ups with Roughriders

-

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed veteran defensive back Ed Gainey to a one-year contract extension, the CFL team announced Thursday.

Gainey, who is heading into his fifth season with the Riders, was eligible to file for free agency on Tuesday.

Gainey, 29, dressed for 18 regular-season games in 2019, recording 56 defensive tackles and two interceptions.

The nine-year CFL veteran has played in 114 career games, recording 272 defensive tackles, 34 special-teams tackles, 20 interceptions, four touchdowns and a sack.

Gainey was a CFL all-star in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, he was the Riders’ nominee for the most outstanding defensive player after recording 10 interceptions.

Gainey’s CFL career started in 2012 with the Montreal Alouettes. He joined the Hamilton Tiger-cats in 2014 and signed with the Riders as a free agent in 2016.

Gainey’s re-signing leaves the Riders with 16 pending free agents heading into Tuesday’s deadline. Among that group are receiver Shaq Evans, linebacker Solomon Elimimian and defensive tackle Micah Johnson.

The Riders’ key re-signings have been linebacker Cameron Judge, punter Jon Ryan, centre Dan Clark, cornerback Nick Marshall, defensive halfback Loucheiz Purifoy and defensive end A.C. Leonard.
