Cougars win two gold at Canada West track finals
Scott Joseph and Kaila Neigum of the University of Regina Cougars won gold medals Friday at the Canada West track and field championships in Saskatoon.
Joseph won the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.67 metres, breaking the school record of 7.53m that was set by Wade Huber — the Cougars’ current head coach — in 2006.
Neigum won the women’s 3,000m with a time of nine minutes 59.67 seconds.
The U of R’s Brian Palaschuk won a silver medal in the men’s 200m individual medley Saturday at the U Sports swimming championships in Victoria.
Palaschuk, who won a bronze medal in the 400m individual medley Thursday, was named a second-team all-star at the national finals.
Payton Schlamp made 26 saves for the shutout as the Regina Rebels defeated the Saskatoon Stars 4-0 in Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League action Saturday at the Co-operators Centre.
Tavia Terry, Allee Gerrard, Lauren Focht and Emma Decorby scored for the Rebels, who improved their record to 22-1-1-1.
Cody Davis and Eddie Gallagher each had two goals for the Estevan Bruins in their a 6-5 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League victory over the host Nipawin Hawks on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Steven Bacovsky made 28 saves for the shutout as the Kindersley Klippers blanked the Melville Millionaires 1-0 at Horizon Credit Union Centre.
Mark Matthews had nine points, courtesy of a goal and eight assists, to help the Saskatchewan Rush defeat the host Philadelphia Wings 15-10 in National Lacrosse League action Saturday.
Ryan Keenan, Ben Mcintosh and Jeff Shattler added hat tricks for the Rush, which leads the West Division with a 6-2 record. The Rush has won all five of its road games.
