Pat Canadians forward Caragata named midget AAA league’s top player

The Regina Pat Canadians’ Cal Caragata has been named the Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League’s most valuable player for the 2019-20 season.

Caragata had 69 points, including 32 goals, in 36 games. He led the league in points per game (1.92).

Two of Caragata’s teammates — Logen Hammett and Jared Thompson — were also honoured.

Hammett was named the league’s top defenceman in addition to winning the Adam Herold Memorial Award, which is presented to a defensive defenceman who demonstrat­es exemplary leadership qualities on and off the ice. Herold, a former Pat Canadians captain, was killed in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018.

Thompson was named the league’s top goaltender.

The Pat Canadians were also honoured as the league’s regular-season champion.

The other award winners were Trevor Weisgerber of the Moose Jaw Warriors (coach of the year); Holden Doell of the Beardy’s Blackhawks (top scorer, top forward); Brett Mirwald of the Saskatoon Blazers (goalie MVP); Cole Duperreaul­t of Beardy’s (rookie of the year) and Cody Beach (official of the year).

The first all-star team consisted of Moose Jaw’s Chase Coward (goaltender); Hammett and the Saskatoon Contacts’ Logan Bairos (defenceman) and Caragata, Doell and the Tisdale Trojans’ Kalen Ukrainetz (forwards).

Three Moose Jaw players — defenceman Wyatt Wilson, along with forwards Alex Bernauer and Atley Calvert — made the second all-star team.

The Pat Canadians are to open their playoff schedule Thursday against the Swift Current Legionnair­es. Game 1 of a best-of-five quarter-final is to begin at 7:45 p.m., at the Co-operators Centre.

Game 2 is scheduled for Friday, 8 p.m., at the Credit Union iplex in Swift Current. Game 3 will be played Monday, 7:45 p.m., at the Co-operators Centre.

The other games, if necessary, would be played March 5 in Swift Current and March 6 in Regina.

American running back Xavier Turner has signed with the Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s, the CFL team announced Tuesday.

The five-foot-10, 225-pounder joins the Roughrider­s after NFL stints with the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks.

In the Seahawks’ pre-season opener last year, Turner rushed 13 times for a team-high 42 yards, adding one reception for eight yards. He had 17 carries for 71 yards over four pre-season games. He was released after the pre-season but added to the practice squad in December.

As a senior at Tarleton State in 2018, Turner rushed for 1,469 yards and 22 touchdowns. He had seven games of 100-plus rushing yards and two in which he exceeded 200.

The under-10 Sask Selects won the gold medal at the Internatio­nal Pigskin Classic youth football tournament in San Antonio, Texas, on the weekend.

The Saskatchew­an squad defeated the Alamo City Red Raiders 18-0 in the final.

En route to the championsh­ip game, the Selects also shut out the Houston Cougars (20-0) and San Antonio Ducks Elite (24-0).

Kennedy Hollinger and Olivia Ell each scored 15 points for the

Riffel Royals as they edged the Harvest City Reapers 62-61 in Regina Intercolle­giate Basketball League senior girls action Monday.

Harvest City’s Naveah Horne had a game-high 20 points.

In a senior boys game, Isaac Simon scored 33 points to power Harvest City to an 83-72 victory over the Balfour Bears, who got 25 points from Keon Thompson.

The Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals are to meet the Assiniboia Southern Rebels in a bestof-seven Prairie Junior Hockey League playoff series beginning Friday, 7:45 p.m., at the Al Ritchie Memorial Centre.

In the other Bill Johnston Division (south) semifinal, the Triple Seven Chrysler Storm is to face Fort Knox. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, 7:30 p.m., at the Fort Qu’appelle Rexentre.

The Capitals finished first in the division with a 34-6-0-0 record, followed by Fort Knox (29-9-0-2), the Storm (22-17-0-1), Assiniboia (11-25-0-4) and the Regina Silver Foxes (7-33-0-0).
