U of R Cougars’ Joseph breaks a Canadian under-20 mark in long jump

The University of Regina Cougars picked up three medals on Day 2 of the U Sports track and field championsh­ips in Edmonton on Friday.

Scott Joseph was the headliner with a gold-medal performanc­e in the men’s long jump (7.73 metres), breaking a Canadian under-20 indoor record that stood since 1975.

Earlier in the week, Joseph was named the U Sports rookie of the year for track and field.

Joely Welburn won a bronze medal in the women’s long jump (5.82m) on Friday after previously winning gold in the pentathlon. U of R teammate Erika Stockhorst just missed the podium in the women’s long jump, finishing fourth (5.75m).

Also winning bronze was the 4x800m relay team of T.J. Mcbride, Brayden Mytopher, Ret Brailsford and Ron Maclean. Their time of seven minutes, 34.64 seconds establishe­d a new U of R record.

The O’neill Titans won the 5A girls team title at the Saskatchew­an High Schools Athletic Associatio­n wrestling championsh­ips in Saskatoon on the weekend.

O’neill picked up 39 points, while the Balfour Bears finished second with 34.

O’neill also finished third in the 5A boys division (34 points).

The girls medallists from Regina were: Jane Cruz of Balfour (silver, 44 kilograms), Julia Petryna of O’neill (gold, 50kg), Hope Neithercut of Balfour (bronze, 50kg), Jayda Baker of Balfour (gold, 53kg), Eve Neithercut of Balfour (gold, 56kg), Gracie Anderson of O’neill (gold, 64kg), Robyn Kirwan of Miller (bronze, 64kg), Aliyah Lerat of Martin (silver, 68kg), Erica Houde of O’neill (bronze, 68kg), Makena Ricard of Campbell (gold, 73kg), Kailey Gould of O’neill (silver, 90kg) and Heidi Gall of Thom (silver, 105kg).

The boys medal winners from Regina were: Alexander Coleman of O’neill ( bronze, 41kg ), Jacob Exner of O’neill (bronze, 44kg), Tony Anonas of O’neill (gold, 53kg), Caelan Ning of Leboldus (gold, 56kg), Noah Zimroz of O’neill (bronze, 56kg), Kordin Gould of O’neill (bronze, 65kg), Alek Eisler of Leboldus (gold, 90kg), Haider Rahman of Sheldon-williams (bronze, 115kg) and Jesse Ilunga of Leboldus (silver, 130kg).

Chantz Petruic had two goals and an assist on Saturday, leading the Yorkton Terriers to a 4-3 SJHL playoff win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Petruic was the league’s regular-season scoring champion with 58 goals and 109 points in 52 games.

Alec Zawatsky scored the winner with 2:54 left in the third period as Yorkton tied the best-of-seven quarter-final 1-1.

Petruic scored his team’s lone goal one night earlier in a 6-1 loss to La Ronge.

Elsewhere, Cole Rafuse had four goals and one assist Saturday as the Flin Flon Bombers beat the Humboldt Broncos 6-3. Flin Flon, which posted a 5-2 victory in Game 1, leads the series 2-0.

The Melfort Mustangs outshot the Estevan Bruins 46-15 en route to a 4-1 win on Saturday, tying their series 1-1. In Game 1 on Friday, Estevan’s Troy Hamilton scored twice and goaltender Keenan Rancier stopped 44 of 45 shots in a 4-1 victory.

Rancier stopped 42 of 44 in a Game 2 loss as Melfort scored twice into an empty net.

The Battleford­s North Stars got goals from six players Saturday in a 6-2 win over the Nipawin Hawks, opening up a 2-0 series lead. Battleford­s won Friday’s opener 3-0 on the strength of a 34-save shutout by Kristian Lyon.

Each of the four quarter-finals continue on Tuesday.
