Teachers deserve better pay

-

I am sure almost every household in the province received Premier Scott

Moe’s recent newsletter, and as I carefully read it I was disappointed that there was not a single word or mention of any money or attention directed to education.

It is scary to see how our educational funding has failed our schools, our children and our teachers. Our government always sings the praises of our wonderful teachers and the great work they do, but when it to comes to respecting them in negotiations for a decent contract, they drop the ball. Shame on you, Premier Moe!

Children and teachers in our schools are our greatest resource because they are our future. I work with new teacher interns in the schools as a faculty adviser (through the University of Regina), and I am so proud and pleased to see the love and care and determined dedication that teachers demonstrate every day. Has anyone in government ever looked at the teachers’ pay scale and noticed teachers with four and five years of university education being paid less than many workers with less education?

It is time for students and parents to stand up to our government and start yelling out the praises in support of our teachers. I know, because of their teachers, my grandchildren love going to school and they love their teachers.

Maybe it’s time for the rest of society, starting with Scott Moe and his minister of education, to show a little respect and appreciation for our teachers and finally pay them what they are worth.
