SOCIAL LISTENING

What’s on in Sask. livestreaming concerts this week

-

No need to be deprived of live entertainment during COVID-19 social distancing. Here are some of this week’s livestreamed events.

Married couple Lindsay Arnold and Mike Davis are Last Birds, a folk-americana duo based in North Portal. Following success with their last group, the trio Hook & Nail, the couple is focusing on close-knit vocal harmonies and interwoven acoustic guitars. Their songs hearken to the early days of country folk music while exploring dilemmas of the modern world. They’re performing from their living room as part of the Saskmusic concert series.

Thursday, May 28, 7 p.m., on Facebook Live @saskmusic1

Feeling nostalgic for folk festival vibes? Check out Briga. She describes her sound as “a Balkan/quebecois mash-up of music, delivered with a turbo folk edge, wrapped up in heavy grooves that drive her wailing violin and sweet voice.” Her songs are half instrumental, with lyrics in French and English. Her eastern European and Romani folk violin style is rooted in her childhood, when her father played the piano to put his children to sleep. Briga plays as part of the #Canadaperforms National Arts Centre series.

Friday, May 29, 5 p.m., on Facebook Live @brigamusic

Feeling nostalgic for a guy playing solo acoustic guitar at a pub? Check out Mike Mckenna Jr. The singer-songwriter from Cape Breton, N.S. plays folksy story-songs and counts Paul Simon, Stan Rogers and Neil

Young as influences.

Stan Garchinski had scheduled to play a livestreamed concert on his 59th birthday and ended up in a hospital emergency department instead. Here’s hoping he has better luck during his second attempt! The Saskatoon musician (known as part of veteran party band the Hot Tamales) plans to sing songs about love, life and cowboy lifestyle.

Friday, May 29, 7 p.m., on Facebook Live (search for “Stan Garchinski singer songwriter”)

Juno-nominated folk/bluegrass singer-songwriter Eliza Doyle sounds “sweet as honey and raw as hide.” On banjo, she can go from mournful melody to high-tempo hoedown. Plus, she’s a good person: If it weren’t for COVID -19, she’d be in Northern Saskatchewan right now, teaching music and helping communities develop music programs. She performs as part of the Saskmusic concert series.

Sunday, May 31, 7 p.m., on Facebook Live @saskmusic1

Calgary-based country/bluegrass musicians Tyler Allen and Dayna Lyn Moritz have been performing Western Swing Wednesdays, featuring the songs of a different musician each week.

Wednesday, June 3, 7 p.m., on Facebook Live and Instagram @ tylerjamiemichaelallen
