What’s new this week

No need to be deprived of live entertainm­ent during COVID-19 social distancing. Here are some of this week’s livestream­ed events.

Like so many music festivals, Trout Forest Music Festival in Ear Falls, Ont., isn’t happening this year. But, the festival is co-presenting a livestream­ed concert from Winnipeg’s fabled Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club. Hear Saskatchew­an expat blues performer

Big Dave Mclean, folk artist Ila Barker (part of the Regina Folk Festival’s 2019 lineup) and rocketc. band The Perpetrato­rs. This show is in collaborat­ion with the National Arts Centre.

Break from streaming services with Saskatchew­an Home Movies, a Paved Arts and VUCAVU presentati­on of 11 diverse short films. The Feather, Joanne Lyons, Gavin Baird, Lenore Maier, Jason Britski, Lindsey Rewuski, Iva Henry & Spencer King Martin, Linda Duvall, Mike Rollo, Shawn Cuthand and Jeremy Ratzlaff are the contributi­ng artists.

The online watch party is Friday, June 12, 7 p.m. (check facebook.com/vucavuvuca­vu or vucavu.com for the link). If you miss the livestream, the program will be up through June 26.

Gabrielle Papillon and Raine Hamilton had planned to tour Saskatchew­an (and beyond) in the spring, with dates in Nokomis, Regina, Saskatoon and North Battleford. Of course, COVID -19 changed their plans. For now, Papillon (Halifax, indiepop) and Hamilton (Winnipeg, chamber-folk) are performing an online concert. In plugging her latest album, Shout, Papillon describes herself as “someone who craves solitude but does not really want to be left alone too long.” So, show her the love during this “online song circle” through Side Door.

Toronto-based old-time banjo player Kaia Kater will trade songs with Calgary honky-tonk troubadour Tom Phillips as part of the Calgary Folk Music Festival’s Virtually Live series.

Pride Latte celebrates the spoken-word art of LGBTQ+ people. Performers include Elise Pallagi, ecoaborija­nelle, Peace Akintade and Javelin, in this Saskatoon Public Library-sponsored event that also includes an open mic for poets, storytelle­rs and lo-fi acoustic acts.

Alexandra Beck is a 24-yearold singer-songwriter based in Saskatoon. Inspired by the sounds of Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé and Janis Joplin, Beck plans to release her first EP this fall. Hear original songs and cover tunes during her online Live Sessions.

Country veteran Clint Black was one of the headliners slated to play the 2020 Country Thunder music festival in Craven, which was cancelled given the Saskatchew­an government’s COVID -19 restrictio­ns.
