Athletic associatio­n honours student-athletes with awards

Ethan Ball of Riffel and Jayda Duval of Balfour are the 2020 recipients of the Regina High Schools Athletic Associatio­n’s prestigiou­s Lorne Aston Scholarshi­ps.

The scholarshi­ps are awarded on an annual basis to student-athletes who conduct themselves in exemplary fashion during competitio­n and in a scholastic setting.

Dr. Paul Schwann Humanitari­an Awards went to Hannah Foord (Leboldus) and Brady Fiorante (Riffel).

Jack Mackenzie Perseveran­ce Awards were presented to Meaghan Schmidt (Sheldon-williams) and Mustafa Alkhalaf (Campbell).

Madisyn Pluhowy of Thom won the Ron Pettigrew Citizenshi­p Award.

Saskatchew­an High Schools Athletic Associatio­n Coaching Awards went to Samantha Haniak and Mike Silvius, both of Winston Knoll.

Ryan Forsberg (wrestling) won the SHSAA Officials Award.

Other individual award winners were Lyle Morley of Leboldus (SHSAA Service Award), Liza Donnelly of Miller (RHSAA Merit Award for Service) and Marcel Asselin of Thom (RHSAA Merit Award for Coaching).

Ten-year coaching plaques went to Danny Ash, Chauntel Baudu,

Leeanne Boehm, Traci Cleveland, Gladwyn Henry, Brett Kannenberg, Claude Martel, Nolan Nadarajah, Kurtis Sullivan, Tracy Wharran and Michael Wolf.

Wilma Downing Coaching Awards, recognizin­g 20 years of service, were given to Kelly Adams, Russell Cushway, Nancy Lamb, Katherine Macpherson, Ryan Smith, Karen Thull, Chris Warnecke and Tammie Wickenheis­er.

Award winners were announced Thursday. A formal luncheon was not held due to COVID -19.

Earlier, the Regina Wascana Kiwanis Club had announced its scholarshi­p winners, presented to graduating RHSAA athletes.

The four football scholarshi­p recipients were Noah Pelletier of Balfour (George Bothwell Scholarshi­p), Christian Fischer of Leboldus (Ben Gofine Scholarshi­p), Joseph Duczek of O’neill (Norman Church Scholarshi­p) and Benjamin Maclean of Sheldon-williams

(Jack Huber Scholarshi­p).

The George and Margaret Yeo Basketball Scholarshi­ps went to Kennedy Hollinger of Riffel (female) and Jacob Bailey of Sheldon-williams (male).

Lee Doyle had the first hole-inone of the season at the Joanne Goulet Golf Course.

Doyle used a pitching wedge to ace the 147-yard 11th hole on Monday. The feat was witnessed by Kari Doyle.

Two days earlier, Ross Mahoney had a hole-in-one on the 150-yard seventh hole at the Royal Regina Golf Club.

Due to COVID-19, the Regina Sports Hall of Fame will not hold an induction ceremony this year.

The next inductions are scheduled for October of 2021.
