Regina Leader-Post

Contributor honours sister, veterans

- ROB VANSTONE

As Santa Claus prepared to check his list, we were listing a cheque — the annual Leader-post Christmas Cheer Fund contribution from a gentleman named Cliff Walker.

Cliff has donated to the Fund for countless years in succession — at least 20 — in order to assist women and children who are fleeing from abusive domestic situations.

All of the money raised is divided evenly among the Queen City's four women's shelters — Regina Transition House, SOFIA House, WISH Safe House and the YWCA Regina's Isabel Johnson Shelter.

In past years, Cliff made the donation in memory of his parents, Harry and Marg. Harry Walker, the mayor of Regina from 1970 to 1973 (and my former principal at Massey School), died in 1978. Marg died 19 years later.

This year, Cliff has chosen to honour his late sister (Roberta Mireau) and two decorated veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces who died in November.

Harold (Hal) Swain, who was born in Yorkton and raised in Springside, served our country as an accomplished helicopter pilot and, following his 33-year career in the military, worked with Emergency Preparedness Canada. He died Nov. 12 at age 84.

Harold Hague, who was born in Earl Grey and grew up in Regina, joined the Royal Regina Rifles as a teen and subsequently transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy. He was a minesweeper during the Battle of the Atlantic before helping to clear paths for allied vessels at Normandy on D-day, June 6, 1944.

Hague later owned Loggie's Shoes on Hamilton Street, near the old Leader-post building, and was widely known and appreciated as “Mr. Downtown.” He died Nov. 26 at age 99.

Swain and Hague both received Distinguished Service Medals in recognition of their efforts on behalf of the Forces and their country.

“They were great Canadians,” reflects Walker, who made a $100 donation in conjunction with his wife, Frances.
