Has all this time at home made you tired of cooking and even tired of your home's decor? To keep my place functioning well for this new stay-at-home lifestyle and to just love it again, I've got a few home projects scheduled for 2021.

I'm designing a new office space, a new living-room fireplace and a spectacular outdoor terrace for next summer. They have to function well and look great, so I'll be taking my style cues from a few of 2021's biggest decor trends. If you are like me and ready to refresh your place, maybe one (or more) of my top five 2021 decor trends will inspire you. I've chosen trends that will last for some time, making them great investments for now and tomorrow ... and tomorrow ... and tomorrow. Best of all, they'll help you see your place in a whole new way.

TREND 1: HANDMADE DETAILS

One of the easiest and most affordable trends to incorporate is handmade detailing on accessories and furniture. I'm talking about elements like stitching on pillows, trims and piping on upholstered goods, and faux finishes — features that give the impression of a one-off, special piece. Want to get the look? Try your hand at stitching metallic beads to the edge of a plain velvet pillow, paint an old lamp base an on-trend colour, or wallpaper the inside of a china cabinet. These sorts of details add individuality and interest to your home.

TREND 2: WALL MURALS

The popularity of wallpaper has increased over the past few years, and now I'm seeing murals and large prints hitting walls to add impact to large and small spaces. Using a large print mural on all four walls helps to enclose a space and makes it feel cosy. Afraid a large print or mural will close-in your room? Cover just one wall to create a focal point.

TREND 3: TEXTURED WALLS

If murals and wallpaper are too much pattern, then this trend might be for you: Wood, brick or Venetian paint finishes add interest and subtle texture to walls. The resulting surfaces create shadows that change depending on whether you are looking at them in natural daylight and illumination at night — so they really do provide endless interest if you are feeling ho-hum about your home.

TREND 4: WARM BEIGE

Warm, comforting colours are on the horizon for 2021, so say goodbye to dominating greys and hello to the pale greige and beige. Beiges team well with any existing grey elements you are keeping, while at the same time beige helps to transition the grey palette to warmer, richer colours like saddle or caramel brown. Here's a tip for bringing beige to grey: Choose a beige that is the same shade (or a bit darker) than the greys you've got.

TREND 5: GRANNY MILLENNIAL STYLE

Adding a touch of comfort or memories of visiting granny's house will be a big trend this year. Even the most modern space can hold a vintage quilt, carpet or dinnerware, which will give a passed-down, traditional touch to your decor. Don't have any of granny's vintage treasures? Try shopping local at charity shops or look online at sites like Etsy or ebay for affordable vintage treasures that won't break the bank.
