Woman found dead after Regina trailer fire

-

One person was found dead following a fire at a home in the Glen Elm Trailer Court on Saturday evening.

Regina Fire and Protective Services received multiple calls about a trailer on fire at 4:46 p.m. and found the fire fully involved when they arrived on scene.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire from the outside, but during a search of the interior, they found the body of the person.

Neighbours said the occupant of the burned trailer was a woman in her early 90s who lived alone. Ron Archbold called her “independent,” though he noted that she had children outside Regina. Fred Hunchak said she used to invite him and his brother in for coffee as they helped her with yard work.

“She was a good lady,” he said.

Ken Hicks, who lives in a trailer right across from the site of the fire, said he was sitting in his living room on Saturday when he noticed fire engine lights.

“I looked out and the whole side of her house was in flames, just blowing out,” he said.

He said firefighters kicked in the door. But they soon came out looking dejected, according to Hicks.

“You could see that their demeanour changed,” he said. “Their shoulders had dropped and they were quite sad, as I was as well.”

Crews were on scene until approximately 7:15 p.m. A fire investigator was still at the site on Saturday night and the Coroner's office was also involved.

The fire department said a cause of the fire had not yet been determined. It was also not known if anyone else was in the home at the time of the fire. The trailer court is in east Regina, north of Victoria Avenue and east of Ring Road.

There was no damage to other properties in the trailer court.
