WHL hopes to get in a 24-game season

-

The WHL announced late Friday evening that its board of governors has committed to playing a 24game season despite ongoing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a WHL media release, the start date “will be determined once final approval has been received from the health authorities in each provincial and state jurisdiction.”

The league's statement also noted that “it is anticipated the approvals will be received soon.”

“The Western Hockey League is committed to providing a season for WHL players,” commissioner Ron Robison said in a prepared statement. “This commitment ensures WHL players will receive the opportunity to compete at the highest level in the system and continue to pursue their hockey goals in the world's finest development league for junior hockey players.”

According to Friday's media release, all playoff models and scheduling formats are being considered by the league's board of governors.

The WHL would have normally opened a 68-game schedule on the third week of September.

However, COVID-19 has forced the league to push back its start date on multiple occasions since the fall. The latest target of Jan. 8 was delayed because of new COVID restrictions which shut down organized team sports across the WHL'S territory.

It appears unlikely that fans will be permitted to attend games — at least in the early stages of the schedule. The league previously stated that it would require a minimum of 50-per-cent capacity for the season to be financially viable, but that stance is no longer carved in stone.

The WHL'S original plan for a January start included limiting teams to competition within their own divisions. The Regina Pats, for example, would be part of a seven-club East Division along with the Winnipeg Ice, Brandon Wheat Kings, Moose Jaw Warriors, Swift Current Broncos, Prince Albert Raiders and Saskatoon Blades.
