Jeffrey Lehto was, simply put, an amazing man, say those who loved him.

His younger sister, Jennah Alderson, said he had a smile that could brighten up anyone on a rainy day.

“He was very loved and he will be extremely missed by many,” said Alderson, who lives in Ontario.

Earlier this week, the Regina Police Service (RPS) confirmed that Lehto was the victim of a homicide, the city's second of 2021. Two people have been charged with second-degree murder in his death.

Lehto is originally from Sudbury. He moved to the province with his wife and daughter around 2011. Saskatchewan's economy was booming at the time, and Lehto came in search of a fresh start. Known for being a talented handyman, Lehto was involved in all kinds of construction and labour jobs. He even had his own roofing company at one point.

Although he wasn't originally from the province, Lehto fit right in. He was an avid outdoorsman and had a passion for staple Saskatchewan pastimes such as fishing, hunting and hockey. He was a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Janet Alderson, Lehto's mother, described him as a very nurturing and generous person.

“He was always willing to help in any situation. Never backing down from adversity,” said Janet.

Lehto's marriage would eventually end, but he later found love again when he met Whitney. They were together for almost four-anda-half years before getting married. Their marriage was short lived due to Lehto's drug use.

“He was a great person. He just had too many demons and he couldn't help himself and we all tried to help him,” said Whitney.

About a week before their wedding, Whitney found out that Lehto was using. She wanted to help him, but they split up a couple of months after getting married.

Lehto was living rough when his sister last spoke with him in December. He was homeless and couch surfing. When Whitney spoke with Lehto before Christmas, he told her he had overdosed on fentanyl.

Whitney described Lehto as a great person and a great stepdad. She believes his story illustrates the need for more help in Saskatchewan for those battling addiction.

Harvey Vince Huntinghawk, 47, and Adam R. Hook, 39, are charged with second-degree murder in Lehto's death.
