Short Forms Contest
JEN SOOKFONG LEE
The inaugural Short Forms Contest was judged by Jen Sookfong Lee. Here is what she had to say about the winning pieces:
In “Hamza,” Hajer Mirwali writes a devastating story that circles around loss, memory, and place. With a fine eye for detail and the poignancy of small moments, Mirwali breaks our hearts with the flick of a lighter.
“Crushed Candy” by Andrea MacPherson captures a specific moment: 1985, when the Paper Bag Rapist assaulted two girls. With lyricism and a spare sensibility, MacPherson brings terror to the bucolic.
