Tea Leaves

I shift my tea leaves back and forth, reading for the past instead of the future. Maybe it’s in the bitterness of the Assam leaves, cultivated to need the touch of sweetness. Maybe it’s in the sugar, grown across baked beaten backs.

Maybe it’s in the water, the droplets pooling from the rainy season into rough-necked bottles.
