What not to miss on Day One

- STEPHANIE MCKAY

If you feel sad because you missed out on the sold-out shows, it’s time to get your head out of the Gardens and explore all the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival has to offer.

Free shows abound and the whole city gets ready to party during the festival’s 10-day run. Here’s our inside look into some of the less obvious things you shouldn’t miss:

Tonight

1. Old Man Markley, 10:30 p.m., Amigos

This Groove Series show mixes an unlikely combo of bluegrass and punk. The California sevenpiece band released the album Down Side Up in 2013, which was available on red, white and blue vinyl. 2. Arturo Sandoval, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Broadway Theatre

If you’re a jazz fan, the festi- val delivers an impressive roster of legendary musicians, including Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. The nine-time Grammy winner plays a pair of shows at the Broadway Theatre in a night that honours the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival’s musical roots. 3. Dinner at the Freehouse

If you still want to hear the sounds of Colin James but you’re also hungry, the Freehouse — with its outdoor patio — is the place to be. Cross your fingers that the rain holds off and grab a drink and a snack within perfect hearing distance of the Bessborough Gardens.
