Dominant Valkyries aren’t done yet

-

The Saskatchewan Valkyries’ lopsided season resumes Sunday with their biggest game of the year, and against a provincial rival.

The unbeaten Valkyries — who have outscored opponents 242-13 through five regular-season and playoff games — host the Regina Riot Sunday, 1 p.m. at Griffiths Stadium. The contest is the Western Women’s Canadian Football League’s Prairie Conference final, with the winner playing the Western Conference champion in the title match.

Here’s some things to know as the women’s tackle football conference finale draws close.

■ The Valkyries’ regular-season wins came against Manitoba (550), Regina (49-7), Winnipeg (60-0) and Regina ( 30- 0). They pummelled the Manitoba Fearless 486 in a playoff game last weekend. Apart from their two losses gainst Saskatoon, Regina beat Winnipeg 41-7 and Manitoba 13-0. They got past Winnipeg 27-13 in a playoff game this past weekend.

■ The Valkyries are 23-1 all-time, both playoffs and regular season, and have won the league title during each of their three years of existence.

■ In the Western Conference, the Lethbridge Steel and Edmonton Storm square off during their own final this weekend. Edmonton went 4-0 during the regular season and Lethbridge was 3-1.

■ Whether the Valkyries win or lose this weekend, the WWCFL championship game will be played in Saskatoon July 5.

■ Saskatoon’s seven points allowed during the regular season was by far the league low; next was Edmonton, who allowed 71. The Valkyries weren’t the league’s highest-scoring team, however — Lethbridge scored a league-high 205 points in the regular season, with Saskatoon coming in second at 194. Edmonton, with 170 points scored, was the only other team to hit triple figures in scoring.
