Paying a price for ‘premium’ fun
Royal Caribbean ads play off the word “wow,” and never is it more appropriate than with the cruise line’s new ship, Quantum of the Seas, to be launched in the New York area four months from now.
When Oasis of the Seas — largest cruise ship in the world — was launched amid much hype in 2009, the ship surpassed the hype. Given that, I expect no less from Royal Caribbean’s recently announced entertainment package for Quantum.
It’s a juxtaposition of gee-whiz technology and talent, centred around three venues: the Royal Theatre, Music Hall and Two70°, a large lounge covering three decks with top-to-bottom windows and endless views.
At night, Two70°’s windows turn into giant screens, combine with six movable Roboscreens and produce Starwater. The concept is to make you feel you’re in the middle of the show.
Credit a Canadian company with the production. Moment Factory of Montreal, with platinum credits that include Cirque du Soleil and Disney, is the producer of this 55-minute, uptempo show.
Joining the previously announced Royal Theatre’s Broadway show, Mamma Mia, is Sonic Odyssey. It’s centred on a giant earth harp with a 136-drum wall, accompanied by singers, dancers, aerialists and gymnasts who tell a story through music and movement.
The theatre will also be the venue if and when the cruise line adds some big-name talent to the marquee.
The word “pay” came up at a news conference. Nick Weir, head of entertainment, admitted that Royal Caribbean is considering charging for premium entertainment: “We’re thinking about doing that in the future with entertainment. It will be in addition to the core product.” He added that premium entertainment would “change the experience in the direction we want to change it.”
Reading between the lines, it appears Royal is considering following the trail blazed by Carnival, which added premium acts this year at ports for some cruises with prices starting at $20 for performers such as Lady Antebellum, Chicago, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride and Olivia Newton-John.
