BMW M5 ends with limited edition models
Despite its days being numbered, BMW still has plenty of love to bestow upon the current-generation M5.
This love is coming by way of two special edition models: the Competition Edition, and the Pure Metal Silver Limited Edition (available only in silver). They’re virtually identical, except only one will be available in North America.
Both are based on the M5 fitted with the Competition Package. This means the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged 600-horsepower V8 with 516 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic — has a zero-to-100 km/h sprint time of 3.9 seconds. The rest of the Competition Package’s goodies, such as the firmer suspension setup, upgraded differential and the more lax stability control system, are standard on both cars.
Where the two models differ is appearance. The M5 Competition Edition is available in either Carbon Black or Mineral White, accented by carbon-fibre bits, unique seven-spoke wheels and badging telling onlookers this M5 is special.
On the flip side, the M5 Pure Metal Silver edition is limited to just 50 examples for the U.S. market, and its biggest difference is the colour — as the name suggests, the unique paintwork is applied with a specific layering process, which results in the surface appearing more reflective than usual. The M5 Pure Metal Silver edition rolls on split fivespoke wheels.
The M5 Competition Edition is already available in Europe for about US$142,696, while the M5 Pure Silver Edition will go on sale in August with a US$133,195 price tag.
