Education is curbing racism, says Wall

The presence of racism in Saskatchewan has become all the more evident in recent weeks.

For proof, look no farther than the comments section of some media stories about the Aug. 9 shooting death of Colten Boushie, who lived on the Red Pheasant First Nation.

On Monday, members of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) criticized the government for lack of action when it comes to racism in the province.

Premier Brad Wall has said previously, “There is no room for racism in Saskatchewan” but critics counter there is room for it to exist now and that will continue without government intervention.

On Tuesday, Wall said he had received a letter from FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron calling for educational curriculum to focus on racism.

The premier noted Saskatchewan has done much to educate youth on treaties in recent years and argued younger generations are less likely to be racist.

“It’s not there. It’s changing,” he said.

Despite much focus being put on the issue here, Wall said racism is not unique to Saskatchewan.

“Sadly, it has a presence right across the country,” he said.

Wall’s comments came after his cabinet shuffle. Each of the ministers selected to run a portfolio were Caucasian. His previous cabinet included Jennifer Campeau, who is First Nations, but she won’t be returning.

“(Campeau) was never there because of her background,” said Wall, adding it was her career and education that got her to cabinet in the first place.

Donna Harpauer was named the province’s new minister responsible for First Nations, Metis and northern affairs.

“Looking at potential for where there is a possibility of quelling any further animosity, hoping it doesn’t mushroom across the province,” said Harpauer of racist sentiments surfacing in Saskatchewan. “Basically, we’re going to be watching this closely and make sure it doesn’t become more than what it already is, which is not acceptable.”
