SaskPower extends fridge recycling program

- BRUCE JOHNSTONE Customers can call 1-877-SKRECYCLE (1-877757-3292) or book online at www.saskpower.com/wehaul #sksavenow to schedule their pick up.

SaskPower has extended the deadline for its fridge recycling program another month to Sept. 30, giving customers one more chance to recycle their old, inefficient refrigerators and freezers, the Crown corporation announced Thursday.

You could save up to $130 a year just by getting rid of your ugly, old fridge, according to SaskPower.

“For those people with an older fridge or freezer at home, this is your last chance to have us pick up the unit for free and take advantage of saving up to $130 a year on your power bill,” said Janson Anderson, SaskPower’s director of customer programs. “We want to extend the opportunity for people to recycle as many fridges and freezers as they can, before the program ends.”

SaskPower announced earlier this year that 2016 is the program’s final year.

Since 2010, more than 33,000 fridges and freezers have been recycled through the program, keeping harmful chemicals out of landfills. More than one-third of recycled fridges were built in 1980s, which cost about $180 a year to operate. Compared with today’s energy-efficient fridges, which cost $50 a year to operate, that’s a saving of $130 per year.

The 33,000 recycled appliances represents a large majority of the most inefficient fridges and freezers in Saskatchewan, so SaskPower is turning to new programs that will help customers to save power, money and the environment.

“SaskPower offers a range of programs to help homeowners and businesses save power and money,’’ Anderson said. “This fall, SaskPower will again be offering the lighting discount program in communities across the province.”
