Return of the Lorde

- DOUG CAMILLI tellcamilli@gmail.com

In 2013, a teenager named Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor from New Zealand became a famous pop star — under the name Lorde — with the single Royals and then an album, Pure Heroine.

But three years is a long time between albums, and some fans are impatient. Now the BBC reports Lorde’s reply to some Dull Normal who asked, via Instagram, “Do you think we’ll ever get another album or should we just give up on you as an artist?”

Her reply: “Give up on me if you want to! I’m an artist, I write a record when I have enough special stories to tell, and it’s all me, every melody every lyric, not some team who just start the machine up every 18 months.”

Then, good news: “The record is written, we’re in the production stages now. I’ve worked like a dog for a year making this thing great …” She’s still just 19. Actress Rachel Weisz, who has two new movies due soon, tells Net-A-Porter, a shopping website with interviews, that movie stars need a bit of personal mystery: “I don’t love going to the cinema and knowing tons about someone’s real life.”

However, she adds, she understands the lure of celeb gossip: “Look, I totally understand why people are curious. It’s how they relax. They open magazines and see stories of famous people failing; crashing and burning; doing well; crashing and burning again. It’s … a relaxation sport. It’s human.”

Weisz is Mrs. Daniel Craig, by the way. She’s 46. Only among the Tinseltown elite (or maybe in Toronto) would US$1.15 million be the price of a “starter condo.” But that’s how realtor.com describes the twobedroom place (“just 20 blocks from the beach”) that Jennifer Lawrence recently sold for that price, in Santa Monica, Calif.

Technically, it’s true: the home was the first JLaw ever bought, when she arrived in L.A. in 2006. She paid US$879,000.

Perhaps you’ve heard that her career has gone pretty well. She now owns a five-bedroom, US$8million house in Beverly Hills, and is reportedly shopping for a nice rental in Lower Manhattan, N.Y. Wondering about her next movie? It’s Passengers, a scientifiction thing with Chris Pratt, coming in December. Stop me if you’ve heard this one, but Jennifer Lopez and her boytoy Casper Smart have split up again.

This seems to happen every few months, but in fact there’s been just one hiatus since these two started dating about five years ago. He was one of the backup dancers on her tour back then.

This time People mag quotes Nameless Insider saying “it wasn’t anything dramatic … it just came to a natural end. They will remain friends and they see each other, but they are not together. It was very amiable.”
