Carpenter wants to help build Saskatoon

Wes Cameron thinks the City of Saskatoon needs to rethink the way it designs neighbourhoods and levies property taxes.

The 34-year-old carpenter has entered the race to represent Ward 1 on city council.

Cameron cited his top issues in an interview as density, infrastructure, property taxes and mass transit.

“We need affordable, fast, highcapacity ways to move our citizens around,” Cameron said.

Cameron also said city council needs to examine “creative ways” to reconsider the property tax system.

“Property tax increases in many cases have outpaced increases in incomes,” he said. “There’s no single issue that is isolated from any other.”

Cameron believes the city should focus on density, but also thinks neighbourhoods should be designed with more services and amenities close by.

The Sutherland resident would also push for greater transparency at city hall. P3 projects and reserve budgets are almost inherently lacking in accountability and run counter to accepted accounting practices, he said.

He added the communications allowance for council members needs to be reconsidered so individual councillors cannot use the money to promote themselves.

The lifelong Saskatoon resident holds a black belt in kick-boxing.

He joins Tyrell Alexander, incumbent Darren Hill and Jeff Wortman in vying to represent Ward 1.
