Teen charged with abduction

-

An 18-year-old Saskatchewan man who was under a court order to have no contact with children under the age of 16 without an adult present, has been charged with two counts of abduction in connection with an Amber Alert in La Ronge.

Jarrod John Charles, 18, was taken into RCMP custody early Thursday and has been charged with two counts of abduction of a person under age 14 and two counts of breaching an undertaking.

Charles was scheduled to appear Thursday in Prince Albert provincial court.

The Amber Alert was activated shortly after midnight. RCMP called off the Amber Alert less than two hours after it was issued, after the suspect’s vehicle was found in St. Louis. According to RCMP, police soon found the two missing boys, ages eight and 10. A timeline of the Amber Alert:

Wed., Sept. 28, 5:57 p.m.: La Ronge RCMP receive a complaint about a grey 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan being stolen from a residence.

7:52 p.m.: RCMP receive a report of a young boy being taken by a man in a silver van, which was possibly being driven to Prince Albert. The complainant also told police that another boy was possibly with them. The three may have been seen walking together near Far Reserve, in the La Ronge area, earlier in the day, RCMP are told.

The same man identified in connection with the initial complaint is identified as a potential person of interest in the report of the missing young boy. “Extensive patrols” are conducted in the La Ronge area for the vehicle.

Thurs., Sept. 29, 12:11 a.m.: RCMP, “with the knowledge the adult male identified was on an undertaking to not have any contact with children under the age of 16 unless accompanied by an adult,” activate the Amber Alert.

12:55 a.m.: Wakaw RCMP find the suspect vehicle at a residence in St. Louis. Investigators locate the two missing children at the same residence. A man is taken into custody.

RCMP do not believe the boys were physically harmed, but said in a news release they are being evaluated by health-care professionals.
