Man res­cued from SUV af­ter crash 5 kilo­me­tres south of city

A 26-year-old man is in hos­pi­tal with un­de­ter­mined in­juries af­ter the sport util­ity ve­hi­cle he was driv­ing col­lided with a semi­trac­tor/trailer unit roughly five kilo­me­tres south of Saska­toon.

The Saska­toon Fire Depart­ment re­sponded to the col­li­sion on High­way 11 near Grass­wood Road shortly af­ter 4 a.m. Satur­day. The semi­trac­tor trailer unit was up­right in the ditch while the SUV, which had sus­tained “ex­ten­sive dam­age” was still on the high­way, the fire depart­ment said in a re­lease.

The driver of the SUV was trapped in his ve­hi­cle and fire­fight­ers were re­quired to use hy­draulic and bat­tery-pow­ered tools to re­move por­tions of the SUV to get the driver out. He was taken to Royal Univer­sity Hos­pi­tal for treat­ment.

The driver of the semi-trac­tor/ trailer unit was not in­jured.

The fire depart­ment did not com­ment on what may have caused the col­li­sion and the names of those in­volved have not yet been re­leased.
