STYLE STARTS HERE

- By Jennifer Jacoby-Smith

Megan Powell, interim marketing director says this spring has brought a rainbow of colours to Lawson Heights Mall. Super brights – such as vivid yellows, bright blues, passionate pinks, and raving reds – are everywhere this season. But so are pastels – the so-called “Easter” colours as Powell says – with soft mint greens, pale salmons, barely pink and cheery yellows adding contrast.

If you’re feeling a little nostalgic when visiting the mall, there is a hint of 80s redux in some of the fashion. It’s not just the rainbow-bright colours, either. Metallic flavours, high sheen, colourful jewellery and bulkier silhouettes are bringing a definite 80s vibe to spring trends.

Another trend that’s hard to miss in the Mall these days are floral prints. While seeing floral prints is nothing new for spring, it is new to see so many fashions offer all-over blooms. Head to toe – from shoes and boots to leggings and dresses – this spring fashion has embraced floral prints in every way. Even accessories such as scarves and hats brim with blossoms.

“We’re even seeing the floral prints on shoes,” says Powell. “It’s fun!”

Finding a dress this summer will make for effortless style. “A dress for summer – whether you have weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, grads – you’re going to need a dress for something,” Powell notes.

Powell identified the quintessential piece for spring as the black blazer in the Mall’s Lifeguide (available on their website, www.mallatlawsonheights.com). The blazer is simple, classic and incredibly versatile. Paired with a pastel tank and ankle-length pants, the blazer goes to work. Or use it to dress up a pair of your favourite jeans for a weekend lunch date.

Powell adds, “You can personalize it by choosing whatever colour you please. Of course, black generally goes with everything.”

A cropped blazer is also a great addition and is very flattering over a pretty summer dress.

“Vivian (our cover model) is wearing a navy blazer which also goes with so much. For spring, it’s a little different than the black. It’s a little brighter,” says Powell.

For spring, everyone loves the light and airy layers. Skirts and dresses boast sheer overlays and inserts for a flirty look that still keeps things cool.

Of course, it wouldn’t be spring or summer without denim. This spring, denim is getting an extra boost. A white denim jacket has become the best cover-up for simple summer dresses or even a colourful blouse for work. With so many sleeveless and exposed shoulder looks, Powell says the denim jacket will be your go-to piece.

Spring is a great time to update your purse or handbag. Lawson stores like Laura, Twisted Goods, Bentley, Le Chateau, and Maurices offer some great bags in fun spring hues.

Shoes this year feature lots of straps or cut-outs. Strappy sandals pair beautifully with summer dresses. The kitten heel is another trend that offers a comfortable heel height that will take you from the office to drinks on the patio in style.

Finding everything you need to refresh your wardrobe or your home fashion is waiting at Lawson Mall. In the last few years the Mall has become a one-stop shop for everyone. Several stores offer petites and plus sizes. Maurices carries clothing from sizes 2 to 24. They also carry shoes and accessories. Laura carries petites, regular and plus sizes. Cleo carries petite and regular sizes.

Change Lingerie has a premium collection of swimwear that will have you hitting the waves or pool looking spectacular.

The Mall has seen some recently renovated stores reopen. Warehouse One recently located into a new brighter space next to Le Chateau. The new store is definitely worth checking out for casual wear for both men and women.

Rogers also opened a modern storefront next to the food court. This spring will see the opening of Brown Social House at the southwest corner of the Mall parking lot.

There’s always something exciting and new going on at Lawson Heights Mall. And every season over 100 stores and services offer up the latest fashion trends for your home and your closet.
