Paint B’dazzle offers DIY advice and more

- JOHN GRAINGER

With the do-it-yourself business booming across North America, it’s nice to know there is still someone locally you can turn to for good advice and a little inspiration.

Jody Timm has taken her love of creative restoration from her house and started her own business storefront location offering one-on-one service and advice.

“I opened the store in November,” she says. “It was getting kind of crowded at my house, so I had to do something.”

Laid off after 20 years of working, Timm decided to take a leap of faith and do something that was a labour of love.

Her store is now filled with items from around the house and yard that are ready for a new life. From old doors to wood salvaged from an old barn, Timm can help restore it and create a unique piece of home decor.

Two of the major components of her business is her use of van Gogh Fossil Paint from British Columbia and Fusion Mineral Paint from Ontario. Paint B’dazzle is the only local store that carries these products.

“They’re pretty amazing paints,” she says. “The results speak for themselves.”

There’s much more to Paint B’dazzle than just paints, knobs and door handles. Timm also offers workshops on how to paint properly on various textures as well as how to decorate smaller home items like pillows and lights.

“I really like the workshops and working with people. It’s like meeting new friends every day,” she says.

Proud students often send her pictures when they finish their projects.

“It’s quite a nice feeling when you see the hard work people have put in because of the help I’ve given them.”

She’s also not afraid to tackle larger items like old dressers and other pieces of furniture.

And, of course, she is also more than willing to offer advice if someone comes in with questions on how to start or finish a project. That’s something you probably won’t find from a bigbox do-it-yourself business.

BRIDGE CITY ELECTRONICS

It took Numan Cheema a couple of years, but he feels he has now found a perfect location for his company, Bridge City Electronics.

Originally, Cheema thought a downtown location might be good for walk-in traffic, but his move to Sutherland is more suited to his retail store, he said.

“Here, it’s like its own town. We have the right mix of young people, some seniors and the working class,” he says. “And we have free parking. That’s a huge plus.”

At his downtown store, Cheema’s customers had to plug a meter. If they didn’t or they forgot, all of a sudden their purchase cost $20 more because of a parking ticket.

“Then my customer’s experience wouldn’t be as good and they would less likely return in the future,” he says.

His move into the right space was helped when Foxy’s Lounge and Eatery reduced its footprint, which allowed Bridge City Electronics to step in and occupy more than 1,200 square feet of space.

Open since January, the new location has given Cheema the space to offer more products and services.

“There isn’t anything else like this in this area,” he says.

Besides carrying a dizzying array of cellphone and tablet cases for both iPhone and Android, the store offers all sorts of other necessary items, from patch cords to batteries.

Cheema, an agronomist by trade, said he and his staff provide top-notch service for any electronic device.

Often, he says, if he can fix it on the spot he won’t even charge for the service. If not, he aims to have it returned and working properly within 24 hours. Cheema also offers a 90-day repair policy.
