PUDDLE JUMPERS

Julian Thompson, 8, and Maddi Thompson, 6, just had to stop and stomp through a puddle on their walk home for lunch on Monday. The sun should dry up the puddles Tuesday with forecasters predicting warm weather for the rest of the week.

Dry, hot weather will return this week after rain chased away the weekend’s scorching sun.

Although it seems dismal and rainy outside, the showers look as if they are going stop fairly quickly — and the warm, dry weather will be back soon.

“With these conditions in Saskatoon, it’ll dry out pretty quick,” Environment Canada meteorologist John Paul Craig said. “We’ll have to wait probably until next weekend before we see chance of any significant rain again.”

Craig said a heat wave followed by stormy weather could “definitely” happen again in the weeks ahead. He said Saskatchewan regularly sees weather patterns like this and can expect to see more heat and more rain later this month.

According to Craig, the surprisingly hot May weekend was caused by warms winds coming up from near the Gulf of Mexico. A low front from Alberta pushed the hot air into Saskatchewan and led to some record highs across the province on Friday and Saturday.

“The trail of warm air came all the way from the southern states into Saskatchewan, and because of that we got those really warm temperatures as well as the fact that there were bright and sunny skies for most of the weekend.”

Craig said the cool rain and clouds are to be expected after such warm weather, adding that there are “usually” fluctuations in temperature around this time of year. But he also noted that although the weather has cooled down since the hot start to the weekend, it’s still higher than the usual average for the beginning of May.

And there’s another piece of good news for Saskatchewan residents — Craig doesn’t expect there to be any more snow this year, thanks to the higher-than-average temperatures for the season that are expected to continue throughout the month.

“We’re not out of that season,” he said. “But the chance of snow is very limited. We can breathe easy for the next couple of weeks.”

The weather is expected to heat up quickly as the showers ease, with temperatures expected to get back to around 20C for the rest of the week.
