Thiessen shaped monetary policy for Canada

- HEATHER PERSSON

Gordon G. Thiessen rose through the ranks of international banking and finance to become the governor of the Bank of Canada.

Although he was born in Ontario, Thiessen grew up in several communities in Saskatchewan and graduated from high school in Moosomin.

Thiessen studied economics at the University of Saskatchewan and earned a doctorate at the London School of Economics. Thiessen also has honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Ottawa.

Thiessen became the founding chair of Canada’s auditor oversight agency, the Canadian Public Accountability Board, in 2002.

His work has been recognized internationally, including receipt of the Order of the Polar Star in recognition of the assistance provided by the Bank of Canada to the Swedish central bank.

Thiessen is an officer of the Order of Canada. His 2002 induction to the order was for “playing a crucial role in the development and evolution of the Canadian monetary system, he was instrumental in lowering inflation and interest rates, as well as promoting economic growth, during his tenure.

“Throughout his 35-year career as a dedicated and exemplary public servant with this institution, he was also responsible for significant institutional changes and operational initiatives.”

Thiessen has served on numerous boards, including the University of Saskatchewan board of governors.

He was also the campaign chair for the Neuromuscular Research Partnership.
