All it takes is one crack and your brand new driveway has lost its appeal. Here we go again! As a native of Saskatchewan you have seen this time and time again. All it takes is one cold winter or too much moisture and your living spaces begin to shift, crack and flake away. At Rubber Paving Sask. we have found a solution for home and business owners tired of dealing with deteriorating concrete. Welcome to rubber paving — an easy-care finish for sidewalks, driveways, pools and indoor floors! Rubber Paving Sask. uses manufactured rubber to create surfaces that not only withstand the extremes of the Prairie climate, but are also the safest surfacing product in Canada. One of the biggest pitfalls of surfacing products in the past was their inability to handle the Prairie winter conditions. Rubber paving is durable enough to clear snow from it with your traditional snow blower or shovel, and it is porous, so water does not collect on the surface and form ice. Best of all, rubber is flexible and friendly to the environment. Every install has little impact on your yard or surrounding living space and keeps base material from being removed and piling up in the landfill. The company brainchild is Saskatchewan-born Corey Redstone who had this to say, “People in the Prairies desire quality workmanship and superior products,” he said of his customer base. “We work hard to educate customers on the importance of proper installation methods, the importance of where our rubber is sourced and why our rubber paving is a premium product.” While Redstone maintains his role as CEO, the Saskatoon Area is handled by Carter Emde. Covering a wide variety of surfaces, including concrete, asphalt, wood, pavers and limestone, Rubber Paving uses a rubber product that expands and contracts with the underlying surface, creating a smooth and seamless topcoat that is ideal for homes and businesses. The non-slip surface is also safety rated and fire resistant, making it ideal for around backyard pools, playgrounds, hospitals and daycares. “When you think about rubber, you often think of tire fires and that sort of thing. We use synthetic virgin rubber that carries a Class A safety rating, so you don’t have to worry about your driveway going up in flames,” he said with a laugh. The two-part coating can be used on top of existing surfaces or for new construction. It can be walked on in 24 hours and can bear a vehicle’s weight in 72 hours. The manufactured rubber is attached with a polyurethane binder that has been in use for more than 20 years. “Everything we use goes through extensive quality testing. The binder we use has been around since 1992. It’s been tested at minus 50 to plus 40, the full range of temperature. [It’s] a flexible binder; if you were to look at a mat that we do with our product, you can bend it in half without breaking, just because of the flexibility of the binder,” Redstone said. He pointed out that Sask. Rubber Paving isn’t just physically flexible, it’s also available in 24 different colours, making it flexible design-wise as well. “We do all kinds of border design; you can put your house number in. We do full colour, match your house. There’s no limit to how creative we can get with the product,” he said. In addition to being able to withstand the Prairie weather and being stylish and environmentally friendly, Sask. Rubber Paving also comes with a warranty. There’s a three-year comprehensive warranty and five year warranty against cracking. Looks like it may be time to fix that driveway after all.
