SINGER AIMS TO RECORD CONCERT

- STEPHANIE MCKAY smckay@postmedia.com twitter.com/spstephmckay

Theresa Sokyrka

When: June 9

Where: The Bassment

What: In addition to being an excellent singer, Theresa Sokyrka’s a pretty good dancer. I once competed against her in a dance competition. I don’t remember who won … OK, I did, but I’m so humble, you guys. It’s the one and only time I’ve won a trophy that wasn’t a participation trophy, so let me gloat a little. Clearly I’m living in the past, but Sokyrka’s focused on the future. You can see what the local musician is up to when she performs at The Bassment this week. She’s hoping to record the show and has a Pledge Music campaign to help out (you can see it at pledgemusic. com/projects/theresasokyrkaliveatthebassment).

Surfer Blood

When: June 10

Where: Amigos

What: If that’s not a scary reminder to make the most of every day I don’t know what is. Time moves exponentially faster in the summer, so let’s make a collective goal to do more and live in the moment. That might mean checking out some concerts. Surfer Blood is just one band hitting Saskatoon this week. The Florida group recently released a video for the single Taking Care of Eddy (they stole the title for my fan fiction about adopting and raising the dog from Frasier). It’s a rad visual perfect for people who love animation The song, also excellent, is from the band’s new album Snowdonia (they stole the alternate name for Saskatchewan).

The Flatliners and The Dirty Nil When: June 8

Where: Amigos

What: Good things happen when people work together. Take Freddie Mercury and David Bowie’s Under Pressure, for example. Take also the Dine Alone Tour, which brings together several acts from the Dine Alone Records stable. The Flatliners, who recently released the album Invite Lightning, and The Dirty Nil, who just took home a Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year, take the stage in a series of shows organized by the label. Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs are also joining in on the fun. They have a self-titled EP due out July 28. The tour itself has also released a compilation, which is available on teal vinyl. I just bought a teal helmet (sorry, always trying to make this column about me). You can pick it up (the vinyl, not my helmet) at the show.

CKY

When: June 11

Where: Saskatoon Event Centre What: Do you guys remember CKY? I do because it was the soundtrack to young men driving shopping carts into large shrubs and gnarly skateboard stunt spills. Yes, I spent way too much time with my guy friends. CKY features Jess Margera, whose famous brother Bam is a member of the Jackass crew (and by the way is my least favourite member. I’m more of a Chris Pontius woman, myself ). The band is still going today and will release a new album, Phoenix, on June 16. It’s the band’s first since 2009’s Carver City. Here’s what they say about the sound: “With hard rock steeped in rebellious notes of skate punk, CKY bring equally heavy, dark and fun sounds to the new music.” B.C. band The Wild! opens.

Jerry Leger

When: June 10

Where: Underground Cafe

What: I love a good title and Jerry Leger’s new album is a fine example. Nonsense and Heartbreak shows off two different sides of the musician’s personality: “primal rock and roll, and raw, confessional balladry.” The record features great song titles too, particularly Pawn Shop Piano. The song is a personal look at Leger himself. “Pawn Shop Piano I think describes how I live my life in some ways, the antique and junk shops, the dayto-day living, the debts,” he said in a release.

Other shows this week: Rebecca Lappa, June 8, Capitol Music Club; Lion Bear Fox, June 13, Village Guitar & Amp; Loscil, June 10, The Refinery
