Injured hamstring sidelines QB Young
Vince Young’s comeback attempt may be cut short.
Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach and general manager Chris Jones said Wednesday that an injured hamstring will keep Young on the sideline for Saturday’s CFL home pre-season game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The injury and subsequent time off may also have an impact on Young ’s bid to resurrect his football career.
“It’s tough to make the football team if you’re hurt,” Jones said. “It’s tough to get evaluated if you’re not playing. Vince is up against it. He’s been around football before and he knows exactly what he has to do to get back out there healthy and start to compete.”
Young suffered the injury Tuesday. He isn’t expected to see any action until the Riders determine the severity of the injury.
Young, 34, has been inconsistent through training camp. He hasn’t taken a regular-season snap since 2011 with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles. He retired in 2014 after being cut by the Cleveland Browns.
The Riders won’t announce their quarterback rotation for Saturday’s game until Friday. It’s unlikely veteran Kevin Glenn will see much game action because the Riders know what he can do. That means Bryan Bennett, Brandon Bridge and Marquise Williams will play.
The injury to Young has created an opportunity for Williams.
“Young was going to get some time and in that moment with the stadium opening up, we wanted get all three quarterbacks in there and see who could handle the moment,” Jones said.
“We were going to have the two young guys and Vince get that time. Unfortunately for Vince, he won’t get that opportunity. We’ll go with the other two and the big stage is there for them.”
