Saskatoon ranked top book-loving city in Canada

Move over, Vancouver and Calgary. No city has a bigger appetite for reading than Saskatoon, according to an annual ranking by Amazon.ca.

According to the fifth annual Top 20 Canadian Cities that Love to Read, released Monday by retailer Amazon.ca, Saskatoon moved up from third place last year to nab the top spot in this year’s ranking. The list was created by tracking the sales of electronic and print books sold through Amazon in the 12 months starting in May 2016.

Last year, Saskatoon ranked third behind Vancouver and Calgary. Over the past year, Saskatoon’s love of science fiction and non-fiction vaulted the Bridge City to No. 1 on Amazon’s list; Saskatoon purchased the most books in those two genres in all of Canada, Amazon noted. Regina ranked No. 7 on the Amazon.ca list.

This year, more than half of the top 20 were new to the list, including Kingston and Kelowna at No. 2 and No. 3 respective­ly.

The data is compiled on a per capita basis and includes all Canadian cities with more than 100,000 residents.
