Regina QB leads Canada over British

Canada shut out Great Britain 35-0 on Tuesday at the IFAF Women’s World Football Championsh­ip and have earned the right to face the United States for the gold medal in Langley, B.C.

Regina’s Aimee Kowalski threw three first half touchdown passes of 13, 70 and 15 yards to stake Canada to a 21-0 halftime lead. Saskatoon’s Julene Friesen added a 13-yard rushing major while fellow Saskatonia­n Carly Dyck kicked four converts and added a two-point convert run. Hauling in the TD passes were Cassey Brick with two, and Laurence Pontbriand. Maude Lacasse added a 16yard touchdown rush.

Eight members of the Saskatoon Valkyries of the Western Women’s Canadian Football League line up for Team Canada. Joining Friesen and Dyck from the Valkyries are Samantha Matheson and Alyssa Funk on offence as well as defensive teammates Beth Thomson, Jaime Lammerding, Rienna Rueve and Shay De Jong.

Canada, who lost the previous two championsh­ips to the U.S. when they were played in 2010 and 2013, will face the U.S. again for gold on Friday night.

SYNCHRO SWIMMING TEAM ANNOUNCED

Six Saskatoon athletes have been named to the high performanc­e synchroniz­ed swimming provincial team. Performing for the team and all from the Saskatoon Aqualenes are Jenna Willie, Bailey Hargreaves, Sydney Carroll, Theodosa Den Brok, Anna Dolgova and Jordan Friedt.

The provincial team will have a seven-day training camp in Saskatoon from July 10 to 16 and attend the SYNC Provincial Team Competitio­n from July 26 to 29 in Edmonton.

KENKE JOINS CANOE KAYAK TEAM

Saskatoon’s Jarret Kenke partnered with Marshall Hughes of Waverley, Nova Scotia, to win the Senior men’s K-2 1,000-metre event at the Canoe Kayak National Team Trials in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on the weekend. Kenke has been nominated to represent Canada at both the Senior World Championsh­ips and the Under 23 World Championsh­ips. Postmedia News
