I accept all gifts that come in the form of puppies, doughnuts, wine and money. (Oh God, I’m a cliché.) You don’t have to get me a gift, but you can make me happy by supporting your local concert scene. Halifax quintet Hillsburn plays Village Guitar this week. I’ve sung the praises of this unique venue before, so do yourself a favour and check it out. Based on what I’ve heard/seen about this band, they’re the perfect act for the intimate, guitarladen space. Take some time today to listen to their uplifting harmonies. Shivers! The band’s Kickstarter campaign raised more than $7,000 to complete their new album, more than double their goal. Sadly my Kickstarter campaign for my very own life-size Beyonce doll didn’t raise a single dollar. Hillsburn’s new release still doesn’t have a name, but it’s set for release later this year. I just date myself with that reference? Probably, but I’ll never apologize for an Annie mention.) The free stage is a fabulous way to take in the city’s biggest music festival and local siblings/band the Karpinka Brothers are just one of the acts bringing the fun with an extended lineup. This is a great one to take the whole family to thanks to their upbeat and danceable tunes. Plus, it’s the last show by the group before the fall release of their new album Talk Is Cheap. It was recorded with Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen) in Montreal. It’s a big step for the musicians. If there are any dudes who deserve to succeed, it’s the Karpinkas. They’re so nice, they make Fred Penner look like a jerk. Heads up, the free stage is in Kiwanis Park this year.
