Closing STC was right decision

-

In the last election the NDP asked voters, “Where did all the money go?” While there were many answers (generally it was for higher public sector wages and benefits) one big answer was STC.

STC was the very definition of government waste. It was propped up by subsidies, having not made a profit since 1979, and was a gift to the public sector unions. It is actively being replaced so that transportation of people and goods will still take place between communities at zero cost to the taxpayers.

We are living in a scenario where option A is what STC was, and option B is the same basic service is met, but now at no cost to the taxpayer. That is, the same basic service will be met once the union thugs and bullies will actually stop harassing people that are trying to provide these services to their communities.

If we truly want the government to cut waste, the government is going to need to actually cut bad and wasteful programs from time to time. Because the biggest line item in the budget is for wages and benefits, cutting means people will lose their jobs.

If we can’t all get behind cutting something as blatantly wasteful as STC, especially when the option we are moving toward is one where very little changes and we don’t pour away literally millions of dollars per year, then we as voters should take a trip to Greece or Venezuela and see where that road leads.
