JAYS CATCH HOMER FEVER

- Lance Hornby

New Toronto Blue Jays catcher Miguel Montero and rare bird third baseman Russell Martin had a lot to take in Wednesday in the Bronx.

They saw six balls leave Yankee Stadium in a home run derby that finally ended in a 7-6 win for Toronto and their more effective bullpen.

It ended with Roberto Osuna jamming New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who represented the winning run.

Toronto took two of three in the series, but remains six games below .500.

The Yankees had shaky pitching from starter Michael Pineda, who was lit up for five runs, and reliever Dellin Betances, who walked the bases full in the eighth and lost Martin on a full count to force the go-ahead run.

Justin Smoak and Kendrys Morales put back-to-back homers on the board for the first time since May 30.

Kevin Pillar and Martin also homered. camp. I couldn’t sleep and I couldn’t stand being awake. It took over my life. I started medicating myself. At first, it was one Ativan, then I was taking a stupid amount of Ativan just to get through the day. At one time, I got down to like 189 pounds. I played most of my career over 200 pounds. Things just spiralled in the wrong direction. It just got worse and worse.”

During the 2003 Stanley Cup playoffs, in his second-last season, he walked out on the Toronto Maple Leafs in the midst of a series in which he wasn’t dressing for games. At the time, it was a significant story, an apparent split in the dressing room. The reporters covering the Leafs knew nothing of his anxiety issues.
