If there was anyone who was perfect to take over Summit Meats, it was Jason Lanovaz.

You might say Lanovaz has meatcutting in his blood; his family has been in the meat-cutting and retail store business in the Duck Lake area for more than 68 years.

“I’ve always been in the meat end of the grocery industry,” says Lanovaz, who took over the Summit business last fall. “It’s what I like to do.”

Lanovaz was a grad of the Kelsey meat-cutting course in the late 1980s and spent time working with grocery retailers in the province. Now he has his own shop and is putting his own personal stamp on the business.

“I like to say better is always possible. We’ve made some changes and added quite a few other products,” he says.

Lanovaz and his staff are quick to act when a customer has special requests. Sometimes, customers want to chat about how they want things cut a certain way.

“It’s part of getting back to basics and getting to know your butcher,” he says. “A lot of people are asking about gluten-free products. Because of that, we have many options for our customers. If there’s a way, we will do it.”

Lanovaz makes all the sausage products in-house and he’s always experimenting with flavours. Summit Meats also has its own smoker, which Lanovaz often employs.

“We are a full-service meat shop,” he notes.

Lanovaz is proud of the staff he has in place, noting they all stayed when he took over the business last fall. All four employees have extensive experience in the meatcutting and retail industry.

A love of golf and a great grasp of website design seemed like a marriage made in heaven for Michael Yasieniuk.

He had been in the website design business for more than a decade and saw a market for golf courses to enhance their online presence.

“We really saw a need for something like this,” said Yasieniuk, who had already come up with an online booking system for campers that has been adopted in many areas across Canada.

“We are looking at helping golf courses and golf professionals to improve the look of their websites.”

Yasieniuk, who officially launched the business just a week ago, has already done work for one of the province’s premier and iconic courses, Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert.

Scott Allen, YasTech Golf ’s sales manager, says the feedback has been fantastic.

“It’s a huge boost, for sure,” he says. “We can take that around and show other golf courses what we are able to do.”

Yasieniuk and his golf team will sit down with the course management and golf professionals and provide their valuable insight into the best ways to market and spotlight their course.

Besides Cooke, YasTech Golf has also partnered with the PGA of Canada and has provided website support for the RBC PGA Scramble.

“We are using these experiences to help us grow,” says Allen, adding golf courses in the United States have already shown interest.

With tourism becoming more and more important in Saskatchewan, Yasieniuk says it’s vital now for golf courses to be able to attract people from all over the globe.

“First impressions really count when people are online,” he says. “We have so many great golf courses here and people want to see what they look like.”

Yasieniuk says his business has attractive pricing options for courses and professionals.
