WE WERE LOVERS

When: July 28

Where: Amigos

What: I’m pretty bummed I missed We Were Lovers’ last show. It took place during the Ness Creek Music Festival with the band performing on a boat while audience members floated around the nautical stage. I likely would have fallen out of my tube a few times trying to dance. Based on photos, it looked like a magical experience. Don’t panic though, you can catch WWL at Amigos on Friday. Well, panic a little because it’s the band’s last show for a while. The group, led by Elsa Gebremichael and Ash Lamothe, is going on hiatus but promises to keep releasing new music. Gebremichael’s on her way to Toronto for a while. Put on your dancing shoes (which, if you’re me is every single pair of shoes I own) and take in some great local music. Alex Bent & The Emptiness and The Faps are also on the bill. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

PETUNIA AND THE VIPERS

When: Aug. 2 Where: Amigos What: Even though I’m far from a musician, I’ve often brainstormed stage names that would give me more of a rock star persona. How does everyone feel about Steph K? No, then how about Elise Mac? Really, I just want to call myself Eleven like the character from Stranger Things. Thankfully, Stephanie McKay works just fine as a reporter name. A rock star name that is a bit unexpected (but also really cool) is Petunia. The Vancouver musician leads a group called Petunia & the Vipers and is described on his website as what would happen if “David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby, that yodelled … or Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s hobo junction.” If that doesn’t get you excited, he probably doesn’t make your kind of music.

WENCHES & ROGUES

When: July 29

Where: Capitol Music Club What: If you long for the sounds of the Irish Isles or Scottish Moors, Wenches & Rogues have the show for you. The local band combines traditional Celtic sounds with rock and metal. As an unofficial Scot by marriage, I feel a wee flutter in my heart whenever such tunes are played. Charger and Degree of Being are also on the bill.
