City police investigate RCMP shooting
An external investigation is underway after an RCMP officer discharged his firearm while responding to reports of shots being fired in a remote northern Saskatchewan community.
Saskatoon city police agreed to conduct the independent, external investigation requested by Saskatchewan RCMP.
The Ministry of Justice will also appoint an independent observer.
Members of the Deschambault Lake detachment responded Sunday to several complaints of a firearm being discharged on Deschambault Lake First Nation, the RCMP said in a news release.
In the course of responding to the complaints, a member of the Deschambault Lake RCMP discharged his weapon, RCMP reported on Wednesday.
According to RCMP, a man suffered “what is believed to be a gunshot wound and received medical attention at the local nursing station.”
The man’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.
RCMP could not confirm whether the injured man had any connection to the initial incident.
The officer involved in the shooting has been assigned to administrative duties while an investigation takes place.
Deschambault Lake is about 310 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert, and about 90 km from the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border.
