Hadwin has faint hope in FedExCup playoffs

Adam Hadwin — the last Canadian standing — still has hope.

They’re down to the final weekend of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup playoffs this weekend with the $8.75-million Tour championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

Like everybody else in the field, Hadwin still has a chance to win the FedExCup but, in his case, a lot of different things would have to go right. Like, a lot of things.

Hadwin would, of course, have to win the Tour championship but, even so, No. 1 Jordan Spieth must finish 13th or worse, No. 2 Justin Thomas must finish fifth or worse, No. 3 Dustin Johnson would have to finish in a threeway tie for third or worse, No. 4 Marc Leishman would need to place third or worse, No. 5 Jon Rahm must finish in a three-way tie for second or worse and No. 6 Rickie Fowler would need to finish T-2 or worse.

Of course, it would be much easier for either Spieth, Thomas, Johnson, Leishman, Rahm or Fowler to win it all.

Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes, who finished 36th overall in this year’s FedExCup race, did not advance to the Tour Championship.

MACKENZIE TOUR-CANADA

The Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada wrapped up another season with five Americans — Order of Merit winner Kramer Hickok, Robby Shelton, Johnny Ruiz, Patrick Newcomb and Rico Hoey — all earning status on the Web.com Tour next season.

Hickok finished with $122,502 in earnings as player of the year, his season including two wins and three runner-up finishes.

In addition to The Five earning status on the Web.com Tour, players finishing 6-10 on the Order of Merit earned an exemption into the final stage of Web.com Tour Q-School. This group includes 2016 SIGA Dakota Dunes Open winner Max Rottluff of Germany, Lee McCoy, Chase Wright, Jordan Niebrugge and T.J. Vogel.

Players finishing 11-20 earned an exemption into the second stage of Web.com Tour Q-School.

LPGA

The LPGA Tour resumes with the inaugural $1.3-million New Zealand Women’s Open Sept. 28-Oct. 1 in Auckland, New Zealand.

Canada’s Brooke Henderson is currently seventh in the LPGA’s Race to CME Globe. Lexi Thompson of the United States sits in first overall, followed by Korea’s So Yeon Ryu and Sung Hyun Park.

SASK. GOLF HALL OF FAME

The Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame will add several inductees this weekend, including the 1964 provincial junior boys team that won a Canadian championship.

The team of Murray Osborn, Andy Black, Gord Chipperfield and Rick Macguire will be joined by Lorie Boyle (player), Peter Cushner (player, distinguished service), Tom McNall (player) and Arne Petersen (builder, distinguished service).

The induction ceremony and banquet will be held Saturday at Riverside Country Club.

VOLUNTEER AWARD

Wendy Besplug has been honoured by Golf Saskatchewan with a volunteer award.

MAPLE LEAF TOUR

A number of Saskatchewan golfers have qualified for the MJT Boston Pizza national championship from Nov. 10-12 at the Reunion Golf Resort in Orlando, Fla., as MJT Order of Merit winners.

They include Sarah Grieve of Saskatoon (under-15 girls), Deer Valley’s Carey McLean (girls 15-18), Brett Leonard of Corman Park and Cort Tunall of Kindersley (peewee boys), Colby Friedrich of Battleford and Jacob Kydd of Regina ( juvenile boys) and Jordan Unger of Saskatoon (collegiate boys).
